Veterans and Family Support
To assist veterans and their families outside the hospital, to ensure a suitable standard of living, whether it be through financial support, moral support, or by simple acts of kindness.
National Military Services
Under National Military Services, we directly help the veterans through farewell and welcome home activities working in conjunction with the VFW Posts. We directly help veterans by making donations to Ladies Auxiliary VFW National Headquarters and “earmarking” (in other words noting on the memo line) the donation is for National Military Services.
National Military Services distributes these funds among Military Assistance Program, Operation Uplink, or Unmet Needs; wherever the need is the greatest. How great is that? Takes the guess work out of it for us!
The VFW provides numerous programs to military service members and their families. National Military Services now covers programs that were once considered separate:
MAP offers grants to VFW Posts and Auxiliaries participating in military unit functions such as sponsoring Farewell and Welcome Home activities and family readiness group events
Military Assistance Program
Operation Uplink has connected over 11, 000,000 active duty military and hospitalized veterans with their family and friends since 1996. 1,235,941 connections were made through the VFW communication efforts in fiscal year 2007-08. These include the distribution of phone cards and Free Call days at 800 + Internet Cafes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Free Call days provide 24 hours of free calling at the MWR Internet cafes on a monthly basis to include all major holidays. The Ladies Auxiliary VFW sponsors this event on Mother’s Day every year.
Unmet NeedsThrough Unmet Needs, the VFW provides grants up to $2,500 to eligible service members and their families
National VFW Home for Children
The VFW National Home for Children provides a beautiful facility for the children and families of the VFW and active military personnel. Auxiliaries should continue to support the Home with donations for the Health & Happiness (.10¢ per member), Christmas Cheer Fund, and Campbell’s Labels for Education Program, along with Life Memberships. Remember, to send your donation to the correct address:
You can always contact the VFW National Home for Children using one of the following:
Our Buddy Poppy program extends a time to tell the story of the Buddy Poppy and every year there are numerous competitions based on the Buddy Poppy. These are times that we must remember the sacrifices made and the contributions that go into the making of these poppies. Remember the meaning of each one and how to wear them proudly! Did you remember ‘All American Star Spangled Bonus Day’ to be held on March 3, 2011? I encourage all Auxiliaries and Districts to look for ways to celebrate March 3 with poppy distributions. Don’t forget all of our other poppy distributions on Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Let us remember that Buddy Poppies are promoted throughout the year.
